Former Florida Senator and Governor Bob Graham has died at age 87. His family shared this statement on X, "We are deeply saddened to report the passing of a visionary leader, dedicated public servant, and even more importantly, a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather: Bob Graham."
Graham was born in Coral Gables. The Miami Senior High, University of Florida and Harvard grad served two terms in the Governor's mansion, from 1979-1987, and three terms in the US Senate. He had a 2004 unsuccessful bid for President. "The Father of the Everglades," as he was called, was elected to the Senate in 1986 and served until 2005. All told, he held elected office for 38 years in a row and never lost an election.
His family created the Town of Miami Lakes in 1960.
Among his many accomplishments, he chaired the Intelligence Committee following the 2001 terrorist attacks and opposed the Iraq invasion.
He died on Tuesday evening in Gainesville with his family by his side.
